Golgi complex was first discovered by Camillo Golgi in 1898 AD. Golgi bodies are one of the components of cytoplasmic vacuolar system. They are disc-shaped and appear as stalks of flattened sacs placed one above the other. From the edge of sacs, rise small spherical bodies called vesicles.
It is particularly conspicuous in animal cell, especially those which are active in secretory function. In the plant cell, it is found in many isolated, discrete and sometimes inter connected units called dictyosome.
Functions of Golgi complex
It is believed to help in the formation of hormones, cell wall materials and certain cell secretion. It also helps in the storage of protein, lipid and carbohydrate.
