cell membrane

Cell membrane

It is found in every animal and plant cell and holds its content together. It is the outermost layer of an animal cell surrounding protoplasm and enclosing the inner contents. It is thin, elastic and semipermeable. So, it regulates the exchange of materials between the cell and its environment. Materials move through the membrane by diffusion, osmosis or by active transport which involves ionic pimps driven by ATP. The membrane and its associated parts form the functional surface of the cell.

Function of Cell Membrane

1.It acts as a selective barrier to the passage of substances into and out of the cell.
2.It carries numerous receptor sites or binding sites to which specific molecule or other agents attach.
3.It plays a role in the interaction of the cells with other cells.
